DIY lovely Manicure





Whether you're a career girl, busy mom or fashion design student, chances are your are days full throttle, leaving little chance sometimes to make room for the little yet big things like a fresh and pretty manicure.  Well, here are some key steps that can help you put prettiness at your fingertips while saving you time and money.  Let's take a peek at the five fast fixes:

1.  Shorten & Smooth ~ Before you do anything else you must take a moment to make sure that your nails are in tip top shape literally and figuratively.  When going shorter, keep frays at bay by using a nail clipper to trim away excess length.  Smooth off any rough or misshaped edges with a fine finished nail file, moving gently in one set direction.

2. Get Sticky ~ To ensure that the pretty polish you'll be sporting stays put, you need to anchor it to the nail bed via a super strong base coat.  Doing so adds life to your mani, helping it to last through typing, texting and using your nails as tools {which we all know we should never do yet somehow we still can't completely avoid}.  

3. Choose Hues ~ Now for the fun part, choose a polish hue that is in season, complementary to your wardrobe and flattering to your skincare.  Another point to consider...deeper, richer tones tend to lengthen and elongate the appearance of the fingers and hands while brighter, punchier colors wakeup darker skin tone colors.  Use your polish color choices to enhance appearances in the same way you do so with wardrobe colors.

4. High Shine Sealer ~ After taking your nails to the point where they look amazing, be sure to keep them shiny and bright by sealing in the color with a good top coat.  Those that are touted as no-chip, long-lasting or color extending are preferred over quick drying formulas as the latter can leave a dull finish rather than a patent quality high-shine.

5. Soften & Hydrate ~ So you've shortened and smoothed, prepped and painted and gave your manicure a dazzling gleam.  Now you'll want to pamper your hands and nails to ensure that your skin is soft and perfectly hydrated.  Many hand and nail products on the market can help you do just that.  Look for those that contain ingredients whose properties exfoliate dry patches, attract and hold water in the epidermis and have anti-aging properties.  These most commonly include alpha-hydroxy acids, lactic acid and retinol.  Want to really give these powerhouses a hand?  Slather them on before bedtime each night and slip on a pair of soft cotton gloves to ensure your skin soaks up the complete benefits.  Don't forget to add SPF for daytime to protect your hands just like you do your face.

What I'm Loving About OCTOBER


Fall fashion is easily one of my absolute favorite facets of styling and one of which I can just somehow, never get enough of.  Fall 2012 is no exception.  From saddle shades of logo embossed boots to richly saturated sweaters, one's closet easily runneth over.  And, while I could easily spend the entire week detailing all the season's fabulous finds, let's look at the highlight reel for now....

//BAGS//  Season after season, Tory Burch's appeal knows no limit.  This time around, her soft summer  hues and their complementary fruit-flavored brights have ripened into an array of deep plums and blues to mention just a few.  Marc Jacobs presents just as well with this gorgeous soft pebble hobo I am completely craving right now.  


//SWEATERS//  For as long as I can remember, I've always been a sweater girl.  There's just nothing quite as cozy as slipping into a soft and warm turtleneck or cardi.  This one here is just that and comes in two color combos (burgundy and blue or black and white) for you to choose from.  Enjoy.


//BOOTS//  I have officially begun boot season and my feet could not be happier.  What flip flops are to most girls, boots are to me.  I guess I just love the versatility they lend to any outfit and the classic equestrian feel they evoke.  My favorite pairs of the season are these by Tory Burch and Ralph Lauren. Classic perfection.


//SCARVES//  What the turtleneck does for sweaters, the scarf does for just about any look you casually love.  With the endless prints, patterns and color palettes available, these one time partners of woolly mittens, have become a fashion focal point all year round.

//SWEATERS//  For as long as I can remember, I've always been a sweater girl.  There's just nothing quite as cozy as slipping into a soft and warm turtleneck or cardi.  This one here is just that and comes in two color combos (burgundy and blue or black and white) for you to choose from.  Enjoy.


//BOOTS//  I have officially begun boot season and my feet could not be happier.  What flip flops are to most girls, boots are to me.  I guess I just love the versatility they lend to any outfit and the classic equestrian feel they evoke.  My favorite pairs of the season are these by Tory Burch and Ralph Lauren. Classic perfection.


//SCARVES//  What the turtleneck does for sweaters, the scarf does for just about any look you casually love.  With the endless prints, patterns and color palettes available, these one time partners of woolly mittens, have become a fashion focal point all year round.

Tied with a Bow





Each season we see an of-the-moment standout piece being styled in newly coveted ways.  This time that crown goes to...The Bow.

From delicate rings, bracelets and earrings to adorable dresses, bags and ultra feminine footwear, this trend is being seen just about everywhere.  Being a fan of all things girlie, I am definitely buying into these looks.  They so remind me of those great SATC "Charlotte moments" which, in my opinion, were the start of the mid-Century love affair we are currently having with fashion.
I'm especially loving these styles being shown by Kate Spade and Ted Baker.  J. Crew also joins the party with their sparkly bow ring and matching earrings.  Continuing the theme is Orla Kiely. Her stripe dress is simply sweet.  I love how the combination of wide stripes and box pleats so effortlessly embrace the bow-tied waist.  Finally, nothing says ladylike elegance quite like these gorgeous Fendi peep toe pumps.  This color is so beautiful and the perfect fall complement to so many of this season's other feminine favorites.  Have fun picking out your flirty fall adornments.

  With the arrival of October comes the greatest styling options of all, the sweater and with fall's chill brings the styling thrill of how to next wear those cozy stars of the season.  From one year to the next, this long loved piece is always a stylish staple for me and this time out is certainly no exception.  Animal prints to fair isles, jewel tones to dresses, sweaters are wardrobe workhorses that can effortlessly carry you from day to night as well as from work day to weekend.
Some of my own favorite ways to work these gems is to layer them over everything - think lighter fabric dresses, skinny jeans and preppy blouses or under anything - go for turtleneck types beneath a blazer, slim jacket or a soft fur vest.  Another truly feminine option is to don a sweater dress, solid, striped or patterned print depending upon your personal preference.  This is a great look for day or night and can easily move from casual look to date night ready with a simple change of footwear and tights.
What really makes for a stylish standout this season, is choosing any of these sweater styles mentioned in an array of those gorgeous jewel tone colors.  Much like the past season that was once warm, airy and light and has now become chipper and crisp, so too have the colors evolved from pastel pretties to rich vibrant hues.  Golds, teals, rubies and jades captivate the scene now and can effortlessly give an instant lift to your cashmere cozies making them and you oh so of-the-moment.
